How KONE Moved from Paper to NFC Asset Tracking

KONE is a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, operating across more than 60 countries. When they needed a better way to track and inspect VOK doors, the high-value safety barriers that prevent access to a lift shaft before the car is installed, a paper-based system was creating inefficiencies, delays and gaps in their compliance records.

CoreRFID initially implemented a UHF RFID solution integrated with CheckedOK, replacing paper inspection records with a digital system that captured asset location, condition and inspection history in real time. The results were immediate: inspection data captured more efficiently, administrative costs reduced, photographic evidence of damage stored against each asset record and automatic alerts triggered when preventative action was needed.

As the business evolved and operational requirements changed, CoreRFID transitioned KONE to an NFC-based system. It operates on the same principle; scan a tag and access the full asset record. NFC offered greater flexibility for KONE’s global operations, with the added advantage that standard smartphones can read NFC tags without dedicated reader hardware.

The underlying capability remains the same. Every VOK door has a complete inspection and movement history, accessible instantly on site. Alerts flag assets requiring attention before issues escalate. And the system continues to evolve alongside KONE’s business needs.
